| For most adults getting into Christmas fancy dress for a party is all about entering into the spirit of the Festive Season, having lots of fun, whilst still ensuring that their dignity remains, if not wholly, then reasonably intact. Donning a Santa fancy dress costume, or even a sexy Miss Santa outfit, is certainly not going to undermine your credibility with your family, friends or work colleagues, and getting dressed up in an Elf costume is going to dent your image only a little. However, there seems to be a growing trend for people to drop all pretense of grandeur, and wholeheartedly embrace the more unusual and off the wall fancy dress costumes. Although still a minority there is an increasing number of devotees of the novelty Christmas fancy dress. |

| Novelty Christmas fancy dress costumes seem to be getting more and more popular, year on year. "Novel" is anything strange, unusual or different, but what was once strange can become commonplace. In fancy dress the term "novelty" covers a wide range of different types of costume. You may think that going to a party dressed as a ruminant with a large pair of antlers on your head, or as a white puff ball with a carrot for a nose, is a little quirky, and would not appeal to too many adults. But it appears these days that getting dressed up as a reindeer, or as a snowman, is not considered in the least bit strange. In fact, these are two very popular forms of Christmas fancy dress for adults and there is a wide range of outfits of both types to choose from, for men and women. A more unusual animal outfit than the reindeer is the Christmas Turkey costume which, bizarrely, appears to be increasingly popular among male adults. Presumably this outfit gives them an opportunity to shed their inhibitions and "strut their stuff", but it is hard to believe that any female in attendance would be attracted to any male showing off the wrinkly folds of skin on their neck and the bulbous bumps of flesh on their head! Christmas dinner is not complete without a Christmas pudding and so, surprise, surprise, there is now a range of Christmas Pudding outfits available to accompany the turkey (and yes, these outfits are available for both men and women). If dressing up as a turkey or a Christmas pudding isn't strange enough for you, what about getting dressed up as a Christmas Tree? What better excuse could you find to stand in the corner and observe the interplay between sexy Miss Santa and her reindeer, or Santa and his Christmas pudding. And, if you are lucky, you may well find yourself adorned with a Christmas Cracker or Bauble. Of course, children's costumes have been the forerunners of many of the Christmas outfits available to adults nowadays, but there are still a few that adults have not yet hijacked. What may look cute on a child does not necessarily work on an adult and, thankfully, I have not yet seen an adult version of the Christmas star, popular with children taking part in the Nativity play. That's not to say that they are not out there somewhere, or on their way! |
